Seven time grand slam champion Venus Williams of the USA lost in the opening round of year's first grand slam to Russian Ekaterina Makarova 2-6,6-4,6-4. Williams, who took the first set solidly, blew 3-0 lead in the decider before failing to Makarova. Twice Australian open quarter finalist the No. 22-seeded Makarova upset Venus's younger sister Serena Williams in the fourth round at 2012 Aussie Open.
