Petra Martic of Croatia knocked out the 8th seed French woman Marion Bartoli 6-2,3-6,6-3. Seven time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams lost 6-2 6-3 to third seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Radwanska will meet 2009 champion Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia who beat Chan Yung-jan in the second round. Serena Williams lost a first round Grand Slam match for the first time in her career on Tuesday after losing to France's Virginie Razzano 4-6,6-7,6-3. Clijsters confirms retirement date after U.S. Open in September

Kim Clijsters says this year's U.S. Open will be her last tournament before retiring. Clijsters already announced that this year would be her last year in her professional career. Clijsters is skipping the entire clay-court season as she recovers from a hip injury, but hopes to be fit for Wimbledon and the London Olympics. Clijsters initially retired in 2007 because of injuries, but returned to the sport in 2009, winning her second U.S. Open that year

Sharapova defended Rome crown

Maria Sharapova successfully defended her Italian Open title Sunday, beating Li Na 4-6,6-4,7-6(5). Li surged to a 6-4, 4-0 lead, but Sharapova to take the next six games and the set. The Russian took a 4-1 lead in the third, but Li fought back to win four straight games to lead 5-4. Both held serve the rest of the way, before forcing a tiebreaker where Sharapova eventually won 7-5. The match took 2 hours, 52 minutes
