Jankovic ends title drought, wins Bogotta

Jelena Jankovic showed no effects of her gruelling route to the final of the Copa Claro Colsanitas as she swept aside Paula Ormaechea to take her first WTA title in three years. The Serbian 27-year-old former world number one last lifted a Tour trophy in Indian Wells in 2010 and had lost all five of her finals in the intervening period.

Erakovic wins Memphis

Marina Erakovic became the first New Zealander since Belinda Cordwell in 1989 to win a WTA title after German Sabine Lisicki retired in their final. Erakovic raced to a 6-1 first set victory before the German succumbed to an undisclosed illness.

Kvitova wins Dubai Duty Free Open

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova won her first title in six months when she beat Sara Errani 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 in the Dubai Championships final on Saturday.

 Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova's Dubai run continues with her semi final win over former world number one Caroline Wozniacki 6-3,6-4. Kvitova, who had never won a match in Dubai coming into this years tournament, has already beaten the defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarter finals. Kvitova's opponent in the final is Sara Errani, who beat her doubles partner Roberta Vinci 6-3,6-3 in the first semi final earlier today. Errani reached the final of the Open GDF Suez this month but lost to unseeded Mona Barthel of Germany.

Semi finalists set in Dubai

Former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova beat defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 6-4 Thursday to set up a semifinal against Caroline Wozniacki in the Dubai Championships. The fourth-ranked Radwanska had no answers for the big-hitting Kvitova, who neutralized the Pole with a powerful forehand that contributed to 37 winners. The former No. 1 Wozniacki beat Marion Bartoli 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Bartoli's aggressive play kept the match close, but she was undone by her service game that resulted in 14 double-faults. Roberta Vinci advanced to the Dubai Championships semifinals by beating former U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur 6-2,6-4. Vinci, who beat sixth-ranked Angelique Kerber to reach the quarterfinals, will meet her doubles partner Sara Errani who beat Nadia Petrova of Russia 6-4,0-6,6-3 in another quarter final encounter.

Serena Williams withdraws from Dubai

Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Dubai Championships because of a lower back injury.
Williams took over the No. 1 ranking last week in Qatar, the sixth time in her career she has been the top-ranked player in the world. She lost in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open last month after injuring her back.

Stosur, Kvitova, Wozniacki ease through

Grand slam winners Samantha Stosur and Petra Kvitova strolled into the second round of the Dubai championships with straight sets wins. Australian seventh seed Former US Open champion Stosur beat Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-3 6-1 while former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova thumped Daniela Hantuchova 6-2 6-1. Eighth seed former world number one Caroline Wozniacki was similarly dominant in beating Lucie Safarova 6-2 6-2. Sara Errani of Italy knocked out last year's finalist Julia Goerges earlier to set up a clash against Sorana Cirstea.

Azarenka withdraws from Dubai

Second-ranked Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the Dubai Championships because of a bone bruise in her foot. Azarenka says she hurt it a week ago in Doha, Qatar, en route to the final, where she beat Serena Williams. The withdrawal ensures Williams will remain No. 1 in the rankings for at least another week.

Cirstea battles past Stephens, Bartoli through in three

Sorana Cirstea of Romania beat American Sloane Stephens in the opening round to start 2013 Dubai Duty Free Tennis championship. Cirstea came back from a set down to clinch the match 5-7,6-3,6-2. France's Marion Bartoli also cam back from a set down to beat Klara Zakapolova, who had 6-3,4-3 lead. Bartoli eventually won 3-6,6-4,6-1. Bartoli will face new World No.1 Serena Williams in the next round.

Ivanovic through to round 2

Ana Ivanovic edged Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the feature night match, 6-3,7-6(5), originally leading 4-0 and 5-2 in the second set before closing it in the breaker. She was still too strong for 21-year-old Pavlyuchenkova, breaking in the first game and remaining largely in control thereafter, with her Russian opponent's forehand too often found wanting to really put her higher-ranked adversary in trouble. In other first round matches, Hsieh Su-Wei beat Varvara Lepchenko, 6-1,6-3, and Yulia Putintseva edged Laura Robson in a battle of teenage wildcards in the last match of the night, 6-4,2-6,7-6(6).

Azarenka to face Williams in Doha final

Serena Williams faces the player she will replace next week as world number one, Victoria Azarenka, in the final of the Qatar Open after overcoming Maria Sharapova 6-3 6-2 in Doha on Saturday. Top seed and defending champion Azarenka defeated Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska 6-3 6-3 in the other semi-final.

Serena reclaims the number one spot

Serena Williams has secured the No. 1 ranking after coming from a set down to beat former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the Qatar Open semifinals Friday. The 31-year-old American will become the oldest women's player to be No. 1 in next week's rankings.

Sharapova, Azarenka through to Doha semis

Maria Sharapova advanced to the semifinals of the Qatar Open by beating former U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-4 Friday. Sharapova will play either Serena Williams or Petra Kvitova in the semifinal. Meanwhile the defending champion Victoria Azarenka stormed past Sara Errani of Italy 6-2,6-2 to reach the semi finals in the top half of the draw. Azarenka will play the winner of Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska clash.

Azarenka double bagels McHale, Serena one win away to reach #1

World number one Victoria Azarenka and second-ranked Serena Williams eased into the Qatar Open quarter-finals with dominant third-round victories on Thursday. Belarussian Azarenka, who won last month's Australian Open, demolished American Christina McHale 6-0 6-0 in just over an hour. If the 31-year-old Williams reaches the semifinals by beating seventh-seeded Petra Kvitova she will return to No. 1 for the first time in 2 1/2 years. Chris Evert was No. 1 in 1985 while just shy of her 31st birthday. Agnieszka Radwanska beat Ana Ivanovic 6-1, 7-6 (6) to reach the Qatar Open quarterfinals, where she was joined by Caroline Wozniacki on Thursday. Wozniacki beat recent Paris indoors champion Mona Barthel of Germany 7-6,6-3. Maria Sharapova, Samantha Stosur and Sara Errani are also among the third round winners yesterday.

Wozniacki, Ivanovic storm into round 2 in Doha

Former top-ranked players Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic eased into the second round of the Qatar Open with straight-set victories Monday. The 10th-ranked Wozniacki beat qualifier Mervana Jugic-Salkic 6-1, 6-2. The Dane had a poor start, losing her serve in the first game. But she broke right back and cruised from there, wrapping up the win in just over an hour. The 13th-ranked Ivanovic beat Tamira Paszek 6-1, 6-2. Ivanovic broke the 26th-ranked Austrian twice in the first set, then saved three break points to go up 4-2 in the second. She broke Paszek again to make it 5-2 and sealed the victory when the Austrian hit a return long.

Sharapova, Williams dominate in Doha

 Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova eased into the third round of the Qatar Open on Tuesday, dominating their opponents with straight-set victories. Williams, who will regain the No. 1 ranking if she reached the semifinals, showed no signs of the back or ankle injuries that troubled her at the Australian Open during her 6-2, 6-1 win over Russian qualifier Daria Gavrilova. The third-ranked Sharapova, who won the tournament in her two previous appearances, downed French qualifier Caroline Garcia 6-3, 6-2.

Barthel beats Errani to win Paris indoors

 

Unseeded Mona Barthel of Germany won her second career title Sunday, upsetting top-seeded Sara Errani of Italy 7-5,7-6(4) in the Open GDF Suez final.

Kirilenko wins Pattaya

 

Maria Kirilenko of Russia won the Pattaya Open on Sunday by coming from a set down to beat Sabine Lisicki. Kirilenko dominated a third-set tiebreaker to defeat the fifth-seeded German 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (1).
