The defending champion Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic started her title defense by beating Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan 6-4,6-4. Kvitova was down 0-3 in the opening set but found her way to win the match. 2010 runner up Vera Zvonareva of Russia defeated Germany's Mona Barthel 2-6,7-6,6-4. 19th seed Lucie Safarova lost to Kiki Bertens in straight sets 6-3,6-0 and Francesca Schiavone defeated local favourite Laura Robson in three sets 2-6,6-4,6-4
